Training

Getting Started

The Tasmanian Aero Club is well equipped to provide for all of your training needs. Whether your ambition is to become a Private Pilot for recreational use, or a professional commercial pilot, we can tailor training to suit your needs and budget. Learning to fly can be discussed in detail with our Chief Flying Instructor.

Aircraft

The Tasmanian Aero Club has many aircraft available for use by its members. Please visit the aircraft page for further detailed information on our fleet. Generally, flying training is started in the Cessna 172 and from there progression occurs on to various other aircraft as the student continues through their flying training. Hire rates are available by calling (03)63918330 or by contacting us via this page.

Learning to fly

The first step in learning to fly is the Trial Instructional Flight. Normally of 30 minutes duration, you are able to take the controls for the first time with an instructor and experience the wonderful world of flight. After this, a Student Pilot Licence ("a licence to learn") is issued so that the student can learn how to handle an aircraft (climb, descend, take off, land and so on).

After approximately 20 flying hours, and after successfully completing the Basic Aeronautical Knowledge theory exam, students can do the practical General Flying Test after which, on successful completion, students can act as Pilot in Command of an aircraft while carrying passengers within 10 nautical miles of the aerodrome and the associated training area.

After the GFPT, cross country navigation exercises are completed as well as the Private Pilot Licence theory examination. With at least 40 hours flying experience students can then obtain a Private Pilot Licence which removes the 10 nautical mile restriction on flying with passengers conducting private operations.

If you wish to make a career out of flying, then the Commercial Pilot Licence is essential. The course is generally an extension on exercises completed for the PPL, which extends the pilot to a minimum of 150 hours total flying experience to commercial standard. Associated with this are the 7 Commercial Pilot Licence theory examinations which are the same as the Private Pilot Licence topics, but covered in much more depth.
